PRACTICE FOR YOUR ROLE

Communication skills for tech leads

A tech lead helps a team see both the next step and the wider constraint. That can mean turning a long design discussion into a decision, surfacing a dependency before it becomes a delay, or giving a calm incident update while the investigation is still incomplete.

THE SHIFT THAT MATTERS

From coordinating tasks to maintaining a shared understanding of the plan.

What clearer communication looks like

01

Make dependencies concrete

Name the input a team needs, who can provide it and which milestone depends on it. Replace vague coordination with an explicit next action.

02

Protect scope by explaining choices

Restate the product outcome before discussing capacity. Present realistic scope and timing options, explain their risks, and recommend a path.

03

Close conversations with ownership

At the end of a review or incident update, summarize the decision, the owner and the next checkpoint. A discussion can feel aligned while leaving each participant with a different plan.

Patterns to watch for

  • Passing uncertainty downstream as if it were a commitment.
  • Letting a design discussion end without a decision owner.
  • Using every standup as an architecture review.
TRY THIS IN YOUR NEXT MEETING

A small change, today.

Before ending your next discussion, give a twenty-second summary of the decision, the remaining unknown and the next owner. Invite corrections while everyone is still present.
