PRACTICE FOR YOUR ROLE

Communication skills for software engineers

Your communication changes what happens next. A clear standup can unblock a teammate. A precise question can prevent a week of work against the wrong requirement. You do not need to sound like a manager to make your engineering contribution easier to use.

THE SHIFT THAT MATTERS

From describing what you did to explaining what someone else needs to know.

What clearer communication looks like

01

Make progress visible

Describe the change in state, not your calendar. An isolated failure condition or a disproven assumption can be useful progress even before code is merged.

02

Ask questions that change the implementation

When a requirement is ambiguous, propose an observable interpretation and ask whether it matches the intended outcome. Avoid turning uncertainty into a silent assumption.

03

Explain one concept at the right depth

Start with the problem your listener recognizes. Add a mechanism, one example and a trade-off; offer deeper implementation detail when it helps.

Patterns to watch for

  • Hiding a blocker until you have exhausted every possible approach.
  • Using implementation vocabulary before establishing the problem.
  • Giving status without a next step or request.
TRY THIS IN YOUR NEXT MEETING

A small change, today.

Before your next update, finish this sentence: “After hearing me, my teammate should be able to…” If you cannot finish it, choose a clearer purpose for the conversation.
